What do I need for Swim Team?

YOUR CHILD WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT AT THE FIRST PRACTICE:

  • SWIM SUIT-All Swim team members need to have a navy or navy/red swimsuit for team meets. For practice, other colors are acceptable. For girls, any one-piece racing-style swimsuit is needed. For boys, any suit he can comfortably swim in is fine. Boys typically wear the jammers style for practice and meets.  A team store through Swim Outlet (link to the side) provides suitable equipment selections.
  • SWIM CAP- latex or silicone swim cap is used during practice. Please wear the team cap during all swim meets. (A HOMEWOOD SWIM CAP WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE TEAM, although a practice cap is recommended)
  • GOGGLES- This equipment will protect swimmer’s eyes from chlorine and other chemicals in the pool water. Goggles also enhance underwater vision.  A good pair of goggles makes all the difference for a swimmer so we suggest a true competitive swimming pair of goggles vs. those available on the “summer / seasonal” aisle in many retail stores. Goggles that are not made for racing will often fall off when the swimmer dives in.  Additionally, the large fabric straps often do not stay in place when entering the water.  Racing straps should be rubber or the bungee cord.
  • TOWELS- Swimmers should bring towels to practice and meets.  Quick dry or microfiber towels are great for meets because they dry quickly for multiple swims.

Please label all swimming equipment----swimsuits, goggles, caps, and towels. They all look alike to the swimmers!!

Swim Team Racing Suit Guide

Why Fit Matters

Racing suits are designed for performance. A properly fitted suit reduces drag in the water and helps swimmers move efficiently. Loose or baggy suits can slow swimmers down.

Proper Racing Suit Fit

Racing suits should fit snug and tight (like a second skin).

A correct fit should:

  • Have no wrinkles or sagging
  • Feel tight but not restrict breathing or movement
  • Stay securely in place (straps do not slide)
  • Be difficult to pull away from the body

💡 If the suit has wrinkles or gaps, it is too big.

Sizing Tips

  • Choose size based on measurements, not just age
  • Racing suits are meant to feel tight when dry
  • They will slightly loosen in the water
  • If between sizes:
    • Size down for competition fit
    • Size up for practice or comfort

Quick Parent Checklist Before Meet Day

  • ✔ Suit fits tight with no wrinkles
  • ✔ Straps stay in place
  • ✔ Swimmer can move comfortably
  • ✔ No sagging when dry

Final Reminder

A snug, properly fitted racing suit helps your swimmer perform their best. When in doubt, choose a tighter, competition-style fit over a loose one.

**Please note - most swimmers will wear a size 22-24.  Sizes 28-32 are often sized for adult sized bodies.
